INTRODUCTION
The Wildest Face of the Alentejo Coast
Stage 4 connects Almograve with Zambujeira do Mar along one of the most spectacular sections of the Fishermen's Trail. Over approximately 22 kilometres, the route follows sandy tracks and cliff-top paths past secluded beaches, seasonal valleys, seabird colonies and the lighthouse of Cabo Sardão.
The landscape is open, windy and largely undeveloped. Between Almograve and Zambujeira, the sea remains almost constantly in view, but the route repeatedly moves inland to follow old fishermen's accesses and protect fragile cliff edges. The result is a day of contrast: broad beaches below, agricultural fields behind and the Atlantic always present on the horizon.
This is a long but technically straightforward stage. The main challenges are distance, sand, exposure and the repeated descents to coves. Start early, carry enough water and keep a safe distance from the cliffs.
THE ROUTE
From Dunes to Cape Sardão
Leaving Almograve, the trail crosses a landscape of dunes, low scrub and sandy valleys before reaching the coastline. Praia de Almograve is the first major viewpoint and gives a clear sense of the stage ahead: a long, open coast marked by dark rock and white surf.
The path passes beaches and coves such as Foz dos Ouriços and Praia do Brejo Largo. Some are reached by steep sandy descents; others are best appreciated from above. The route then continues through coastal farmland and open heath towards Cavaleiro and Cabo Sardão.
At the cape, the lighthouse stands above cliffs where seabirds nest on narrow ledges. This is one of the most memorable viewpoints on the entire trail, but it is also exposed and subject to erosion. From Cabo Sardão, the trail turns south towards Entrada da Barca and the final approach to Zambujeira do Mar.
The red-and-yellow Grande Rota signs are generally clear. Follow the current route and avoid unofficial shortcuts across dunes or private land. The Fishermen's Trail is exclusively pedestrian and the cliff edges are unstable in places.
THE BEACHES
Beaches Below the Cliffs
Praia de Almograve is framed by dunes and dark rock platforms, creating a broad opening to the stage. Foz dos Ouriços and Praia do Brejo Largo are quieter, more exposed and reached by paths that demand care on loose sand.
Near the end of the stage, the small harbour of Entrada da Barca offers a striking contrast: a sheltered fishing inlet surrounded by high cliffs. The final arrival at Zambujeira do Mar brings the walker back to a whitewashed village above the ocean.

HISTORY
Cape, Harbour and Fishing Tradition
The coast between Almograve and Zambujeira has been shaped by fishing, shellfish gathering and small-scale agriculture. The paths above the beaches were practical routes to fishing grounds rather than recreational trails, and the difficult terrain preserves much of their original character.
Cabo Sardão. The lighthouse at Cabo Sardão remains an essential maritime landmark. The cape marks one of the most exposed points of this coastline, where navigation, weather and the sea have always demanded attention.
Entrada da Barca. This small natural harbour is still associated with fishing and marine resources. Its position below the cliffs shows how local communities used every sheltered inlet available on an otherwise open shore.
Zambujeira do Mar. The destination grew from a rural and fishing settlement. Its chapel and cliff-top position preserve the visual relationship between village, sea and working coast.

WILDLIFE & NATURE
Seabirds, Dunes and Coastal Heath
Cabo Sardão and the surrounding cliffs provide nesting habitat for peregrine falcons, rock doves, yellow-legged gulls, cormorants and other seabirds. White storks may occasionally be seen along the wider Vicentine coast, while kestrels hover above the open fields.
In spring, the cliff-top grasslands can display sea thrift, sea daffodil and other salt-tolerant plants. The dunes shelter sea holly, maritime grasses and low shrubs such as juniper, rockrose and Portuguese crowberry. Around seasonal streams and small wetlands, look for grey herons, little egrets, glasswort and sea lavender.
Dolphins may pass offshore, but sightings are never guaranteed. Keep binoculars pointed towards the cliffs from a safe distance and never approach nesting ledges.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Tips for a Safe Hike
Water and food. Almograve is the best place to stock up. Services along the route are seasonal and limited; carry at least 1.5 litres of water and food for the full stage.
Cape Sardão. The cape is exposed to wind and has dangerous cliff edges. Stay behind marked limits and do not walk close to the precipice for photographs.
Sand and descents. Loose sand makes the beach accesses tiring. Secure footwear and a windproof layer are recommended.
Season. The Fishermen's Trail is generally best walked between September and June. Avoid walking in the hottest part of summer where possible.

Almograve: Dunes Above the Ocean
Almograve offers cafés, shops and accommodation, making it a practical start. Before leaving, visit the beach viewpoint and buy all necessary provisions. The first coastal section sets the rhythm of the day: open dunes, wind and wide Atlantic views.
EXTRA TIME
What to Do in Zambujeira do Mar
After arriving, explore the village, visit the chapel above the sea and watch the sunset from the cliffs. Zambujeira also offers restaurants and accommodation, making it a comfortable place to rest before continuing towards Odeceixe.
Stage 4 is a long passage through the working landscape of the Vicentine coast: beaches below the cliffs, a lighthouse above the Atlantic, a fishing harbour hidden in rock and a village facing the sea.
